Part of the fun of cleaning out the back room has been coming across unfinished projects, like these bird houses. I painted most of them, but put off buying shellac, then bought the shellac, then lost it. So I decided to just stick these outside of the breakfast room window and let them age unto rot rather than trashing them.
Kate was REAL excited that she would get to help paint the one house that was incomplete. She’s been asking and asking to use the tempura paints (read: messy and high maintenance for mom), so was very pleased to be given gooey paints like acrylic (while carefully observed) to create with.
We also spent a bunch of time talking again about how we cook pasta. She has me show her the boiling water, and we talk about what that looks like and what steam is, and when to add the pasta. Then timing the cooking time and talking about the bell going off. There are a lot of concepts that I want her to start getting familiar with. Think of it as pre-science or science vocabulary building.
Last, I tried something new when I put her down for her nap. We read three stories: Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild; God Loves Me More Than That; and Everyone Poops — and then I let her pick out several books to page through while I cleaned up her room. This gave her time to settle down before we did the final “close your eyes, put your head on the pillow, and stop talking” bit. It worked well. We avoided a fight, she went down fast, and now her room is straight.
